Reading the World Through Youth Eyes: Story Slam Art Exhibits 2026

There is something powerful that happens when young people move through the world with intention; when they hike eight miles through rain, when they stand at the edge of a field and breathe deeply, when they tell a story that has lived inside them for years. Research on outdoor learning and adventure‑based challenges shows that these experiences build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging that young people carry long after the trail ends. For refugee youth, these moments do even more: they create space to reclaim voice, identity, and possibility.

Paulo Freire reminds us that education must help us “read the world” as much as we read the word. Our Peer Mentor Leadership Program is built on that belief. In nature, youth learn to read landscapes, weather, risk, and each other, and in doing so, they learn to read themselves. They practice reflection, decision‑making, and collective care. They discover that challenge is not something to fear, but something that reveals who they are becoming.
That’s why our upcoming Story Slam Art Exhibits mean so much. They’re a chance to witness how the trail, the river, the rain, and the long miles become stories of strength, identity, and becoming.
One youth leader captures the heart of challenge‑as‑teacher when he begins, “I’m soaking wet, tired, after an 8‑mile hike…” What follows is a reflection on our ancestors, the people to whom this land belonged, the ways nature can be both beautiful and cruel, and how friendships are forged on the trail. A story he’ll share in full at the Story Slam!
Through photography, narrative, and shared experience, youth step into visibility as artists, storytellers, and cultural leaders. Their stories trace journeys across mountains and rivers, across identities and cultures, across moments of fear, joy, exhaustion, and freedom. They invite us to witness not only what they have endured, but how they rise again and again.
This initiative is made possible through the partnership of Ensemble Media and the Simmons Center for Global Chicago, whose support helped us create the space, tools, and visibility our youth deserve.
Below, you’ll find the flyers for our April 4 and April 25 events, along with a short video teaser featuring two of our Peer Mentors. In just a few seconds, you’ll hear the honesty and strength that guide their journeys.
We hope you’ll join us to listen, to learn, and to stand alongside young people who are shaping their own narratives with courage, imagination, and heart.
Teaser video and flyers are below. All are welcome.
